We are excited about the 2011/2012 school year being the premier year of the El Toro Symphony Orchestra we have approximately 100 musicians involved in the ensemble. The Symphony Orchestra is an instrumental ensemble, with strings, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Among the instrument groups and within each group of instruments, there is a generally accepted hierarchy. Every instrumental group (or section) has a principal player who is generally responsible for leading that particular section and playing any solos. The principal first violinist is also known as the “concertmaster” who is also responsible for general leadership and is responsible for tuning the group before a performance.
How it works:
- Symphony Strings (violins, violas, cellos, and basses) are enrolled in either 2nd or 6th period orchestra
- Chamber Orchestra (violins, violas, cellos, and basses) are enrolled in 3rd period advanced orchestra
- Symphony Winds (woodwinds, brass, and percussion) are enrolled in 3rd period wind ensemble
Each class period will work on their music during the school day. On Monday evenings prior to a performance Symphony Strings, Chamber Orchestra, and Symphony Winds rehearse together as the Symphony Orchestra. A calander of rehearsal and performance dates for the school year will be provided by the director.
